We're quickly discovering that giving those in poverty cash is more impactful than most (if not all) other aid forms whilst respecting the individual's dignity and ability to direct their own lives.
Those facing extreme poverty know better than anyone what they need to support themselves.
And, so …
We're excited to bring to you Moyo, where givers can come together to provide a reliable monthly income to people in the most deprived regions worldwide.
How does Moyo work?
Moyo raises money from willing donors and then uses that money to keep people in the poorest regions comfortably above the poverty line by providing them with a sustained and direct monthly income.
We collaborate with vetted local organisations to identify those most in need and distribute funds accordingly. Each recipient is allocated an amount based on their unique situation and regional cost of living, with families with dependents qualifying for more. At the end of each month, these funds are made accessible through various means, such as bank accounts, money pickups, or mobile money/airtime, ensuring a hassle-free retrieval process.
What's the plan?
This is the first official brand and giving model, we are launching underneath the Kwanda umbrella, and we will take baby steps to ensure we get this right.
We're officially scheduled to open the platform to donors in early October to raise network funds. We will begin signing up beneficiaries as we roll into November, just in time for the holidays.
The pilot will be launched first in Nigeria, where we'll sign up the first recipients of our raised capital. As mentioned above, we will collaborate with vetted local organisations to identify those most needing support.
Stated goals
Our stated goals are fixed and straightforward: 1) Raise a consistent source of funding from willing donors; 2) Use those funds to keep as many people as possible above the poverty line in perpetuity; 3) Communicate the positive impact of this effort to our donors.
The simple metric we'll track is the number of people/households we sustain above the poverty line.
'Sustain' is a keyword here. We don't just want to support people for some months and then disappear. The promise is a steady income for as long as it is needed. To ensure this, we'll put 50% of all income raised directly into the distribution pool and keep the other 50% in cash reserves to cover any donor exits.
