Where we go next

Company news

As you know, we closed the doors on our platform earlier this year, shortly after our 3rd anniversary. I won't re-hash the details as I wrote all about it here.

Since then, we've been tinkering away in the background and exploring ways to advance our mission:

To build a community of givers to empower those constrained by poverty so they may freely make their much-needed contributions to the story of humankind.

Such a mission requires a multi-pronged, sustained and collective effort, so here we are: rested, re-energised and ready to re-establish our brand and mission. Yes. Kwanda is back, and we've made some structural changes to our organisation to ensure its long-term resilience.

How exactly does this look?

Kwanda 2.0 will see us evolve into a holding company, a move that allows us to launch an array of new brands and giving models underneath the Kwanda umbrella.

We're going to launch different brands underneath Kwanda that share the same mission but utilise different approaches. This is great because each brand doesn't have to be a monolith to contribute meaningfully to our mission, and we can also create different models that appeal to different types of givers.

We're also going to offer small local non-profits that are doing fantastic work (but need a larger machine behind them) the opportunity to merge into Kwanda and leverage a reliable payroll, our technology, fundraising capacity and more. This is really exciting because we can leverage Kwanda to amplify the great work already being carried out in local communities rather than reinventing the wheel.

We're, of course, putting together a detailed strategic memo that we will publish to members of our giving network this quarter. But, still, there are some details you should know:

Good to know

We're still committed to financial transparency. We're currently re-building our data room so we can continue streaming our account balances and giving you a complete view of our income, spending and more.

We're doubling down on community and will open up another intimate digital space where the members of Kwanda can convene, discuss and collaborate.

We're going to re-open donations to Kwanda, either one-off or regular. Any donations to Kwanda will be used to sustain the organisation, and any excess will be distributed to the brands and projects under the Kwanda umbrella. This means 100% of the income received directly by the brands under the Kwanda umbrella will go directly towards the stated goals of the brand.

I know we all don't like reading long-form as much nowadays, so I've tried my best to keep this letter tight, but in truth, so many exciting things are ahead, and we'll slowly peel the onion over the coming months.

Alright ... so what's next?

The first brand we're launching under the Kwanda umbrella is Moyo: A simple distribution protocol to keep people in the poorest regions comfortably above the poverty line by providing them with a sustained and direct monthly income.

We'll be launching the pilot in Nigeria this October. If you're reading this email, you're on Kwanda's mailing list, and I'll be sure to let you know once we open up Moyo to givers like yourself who might want to get involved in poverty alleviation.

Still, you can learn all about Moyo here.

Final words

Kwanda is back, and we're excited to re-establish ourselves as innovators in the world of giving; we hope you'll stick along for the ride :)
