BYP Network is raising a £10,000 fund for households which have family members risking their lives to work due to financial insecurities. This fund will support key workers in the black community who are immunocompromised, chronically ill, asthmatic, elderly, or posing a risk to others within their households.
These households may include a member who works in a care home that has confirmed Covid-19 cases, a bus driver that is at risk from passengers or a nurse who is immunocompromised.
The government has previously labelled these individuals as ‘low skilled’ and now calls them ‘key workers’ and heroes for risking their lives. Yet they have not been given adequate PPE, a pay rise or even the guarantee that funeral costs will be covered.
This fund is being put in place because statistically black and minority ethnics are disproportionately dying from Covid-19. BME in the UK make up just 13% of the population but account for 35% of Covid-19 related deaths. There are many reasons for this:
- Low socio-economical neighbourhoods
- Crowded houses that are intergenerational
- Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes
- Service workers i.e. cleaners, carers and nurses
We spoke to Emmanuel who mentioned that his mother is working in a care home that has seven deceased residents and one deceased staff. His mother was still working but has now left due to the fear of falling sick. If individuals who find themselves at risk decide to leave, they will need support to navigate the financial uncertainty that comes with that decision. On the other hand, relief for individuals who are not in positions where they can leave their job could help reduce stress, anxiety and therefore assist in maintaining their health.
This is where we need your help. There are many more stories like this within our community, and sadly some households have already lost family members to Covid-19 because of the lack of suitable protection.
This fund is being raised for those who are:
- Black/mixed persons of African or Caribbean descent
- Having one or more members of their household classed as ‘at risk’ or ‘vulnerable’
- Living in low-income households
This fund is providing two relief options: £250 to cover food, bills etc, or £500 to cover larger costs such as rent payments.
