Help build Kwanda

Kwanda brings the diaspora together to fund productive inputs across Africa and the Caribbean. Members pool monthly contributions, vote on what we fund and see how the money is spent.

What we’re building

We’re looking for people who can take ownership of an area, test ideas and turn what works into something repeatable. The areas are partnerships, fundraising, events and media.

The budget reality

We have no budget set aside for new salaries or retainers. Our only flexible budget is £2,000 a month, currently spent on ads that bring in new villagers. Moving that money requires a credible case that another approach can perform better.

There are two ways to get involved:

  • Volunteer: contribute within a clearly agreed scope and time commitment.
  • Build a route to paid work: propose an activity that can generate enough additional income to cover its costs and your compensation. Explain when money would arrive and what would remain for Kwanda. Any payment arrangement must be agreed before work begins.

If you need guaranteed pay from the outset, we cannot offer that today. Please be direct about what you need.

How we work

  • Remote, with short written updates and calls when there is a clear purpose.
  • Small tests before large plans. Evidence before more spending.
  • Ownership: propose, organise, deliver and report results within agreed boundaries.
  • Use existing tools, AI and automation where useful. Document what works so others can repeat it.
  • Be clear about your capacity and flag problems early.

Before a call

Tell us one area you could own, what you would test in your first 30 days with no starting budget, and what result would justify continuing. Bullets are welcome. No deck needed. A call comes after we’ve established a fit in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I simply volunteer?

Absolutely. You can contribute a skill, help with a project or take responsibility for an area. Volunteer work does not have to generate income to be valuable.

How much time do I need?

Tell us what you can comfortably offer. We’ll agree a manageable scope, clear boundaries and a review point. You can contribute alongside your job.

Do I need my own idea?

No. You can help with an existing initiative or suggest something new. Tell us what you enjoy doing and where you could contribute.

What support is available?

Relevant tools, content, context and introductions, plus founder input for direction and decisions. We value people who can move agreed work forward independently.

What does “owning an area” mean?

Taking responsibility for planning, delivery and learning. We agree decision-making boundaries upfront. Ownership means responsibility, not equity.

Is paid work possible?

There’s no hiring budget today, but we’re open to proposals that can fund their own costs and compensation. Terms must be agreed before starting. Volunteering does not guarantee future pay.

What does “profitable” mean here?

For activities intended to generate income, it means covering costs and leaving a surplus for Kwanda’s mission. That is not the measure of every volunteer contribution.

What if something doesn’t work?

We learn, adjust or stop together. There’s no expectation of an indefinite commitment, and any agreed payment terms still apply.

What happens after I respond?

We review where your interests, skills and availability fit. If there’s a match, we discuss a small first contribution and agree expectations before starting.
