Installing a solar power unit in one of our clinic’s in Nigeria
Funds required: £400

Summary

Safe City, the free clinic in Oworoshoki that we've been funding, needs a solar backup system to keep running during power cuts. The community has already raised most of the funds. This proposal closes the gap so the clinic can maintain electronic records and deliver care when the grid fails.

Safe City has served 6,575 patients in its first year, consistently exceeding its target of 300-400 per month. It's the only free clinic for low-income families in the area, with patients travelling from Bariga, Gbagada, and other neighbouring communities.

The clinic runs on grid power, but outages have become frequent, especially during rainy season. When the power goes out, electronic medical records are interrupted, WiFi drops, and staff work in poor lighting. The team has been using a mini UPS as a stopgap, but it can't sustain longer outages.

The need

The clinic needs a solar backup system that kicks in automatically during outages. The community has been fundraising through donations and plastic recycling, but they haven't reached the full amount. A vetted local installer has quoted N900,000 for the system.

Our contribution would close the funding gap and let the installation proceed. The community keeps ownership of the effort.

$550 completes the funding for a solar power system including installation, testing, and basic staff training. AHA Initiative will combine this with community-raised funds to cover the full N900,000 cost.
