Solar lighting for City of Peace Shelter in Kiambu, Kenya
Funds required: £2,000

Summary

A donation of £2,000 will fund portable solar lighting for the City of Peace Shelter and the City of Peace Learning Centre in Kiambu, Kenya. The lights will keep bedrooms, classrooms, and walkways usable during frequent blackouts, so mothers can care for babies safely at night and learners can keep studying.

Wounded Healers Foundation was started by survivors of sexual assault and community advocates who refused to accept that girls who have survived sexual violence should be left to cope alone. Through the City of Peace Learning Centre, the team provides literacy, computer skills, tailoring, and business training, so young women can rebuild their independence.

However, Josphine Wanjiru, Kenya Programme Director at Wounded Healers Foundation, sees the same problem each evening at City of Peace: power cuts arrive just as mothers are settling babies to sleep and learners are trying to study.

When the electricity goes out, rooms go dark, and staff and residents rely on mobile phone torches. Portable solar lighting will help the shelter and learning centre stay safe and functional even when the grid fails.

Why this matters

Reliable lighting is a basic part of safety and stability in rented buildings with limited infrastructure.

At the shelter, safe light at night helps mothers move around confidently and care for babies without fumbling in the dark. At the learning centre, lighting keeps classes and study time going when blackouts hit.

What the project will change

This project will make daily life easier and safer for young mothers, babies, and community learners in Kiambu.

At the City of Peace Shelter, solar lighting will improve visibility in bedrooms, hallways, and outdoor walkways at night. At the City of Peace Learning Centre, lessons can continue into the evening when needed, and learners can study without interruption.

That's all!
