Six water well drilling and construction projects have brought clean water to rural communities in Kigoma, Tanzania. Completed in October 2025, the boreholes are now serving over 4,300 people, 95% students and 5% teachers and neighbouring families.

The six schools benefiting from the new water systems are Nyaruhande A Primary School, Mwenda Primary School, Tumaini Primary School, Jua Kita Primary School, Kasyenene Primary School, and Nyumbigwa Mpya Secondary School.

Impact on education and health

Students who previously walked over 1 kilometre to access unsafe water sources, wasting more than an hour that should have been spent studying, now walk less than 100 yards to reach clean water at their schools.

Leonard, a teacher at Nyaruhande Primary School who supervises the WASH program, shared:

We were always against the hygiene standards because of water challenges. Children came to school with water in gallons and often walked 1.7km to water sources. The water was never safe — it was dirty and unsafe.

He continued:

We thank Mboni ya Vijana for the amazing job of building a water system at our school. Children are no more wasting time to collect water, securing clean water at the school. We are improving the school standards and education quality.

Looking ahead

Eight additional schools have reached out to Mboni ya Vijana requesting borehole drilling and pump installation. The team continues to remotely monitor the six completed sites and assess future opportunities to expand access to clean water in Kigoma's rural communities.
